10/6 Kinematics Review
From now on, we are going to meet in Room 6E6/8 (find us in one of these rooms) on Thursdays.
On 10/6, we went over basic kinematics. Everyone has to memorize the first five equations from the "Mechanics" list on the last page of the physics reference tables (http://www.p12.nysed.gov/apda/reftable/physics-rt/physics06tbl.pdf).
For those of you who missed the lesson or want to review, please visit this excellent site: http://www.aplusphysics.com/courses/regents/kinematics/regents_kinematics.html and read up to "Free Fall." Also, another great source of review is pgs. 155-195 of this online textbook: http://www.fhsst.org/files/V0-5/PhysicalScience_Gr10.pdf. Also, please print out the "11.11 Summary" on page 191 from the online textbook and keep it in the folder/binder that you bring to sci bowl. Please take the time to read through these resources if you are having trouble with kinematics (remember the kinematic equations only work with constant acceleration!).
Also, everyone is required to do these 3 problems on a separate piece of paper for tomorrow's meeting (the problems get progressively harder):
1. Theresa has to walk to the shop to buy some milk. After walking 100m, she realizes that she does not have enough money, and goes back home. If it took her two minutes to leave and come back, calculate the following:
a) How long was she out of the house (the time interval in seconds)?
b) How far did she walk (distance (d))?
c) What was her displacement (change in x)?
d) What was her average velocity (in m/s)?
e) What was her average speed (in m/s)?
2. A motorcycle has a uniform acceleration of 4 m/s^2. Assume the motorcycle has an initial velocity of 20 m/s. Determine the velocity and displacement at the end of 12 s.
3. A particle starts from rest, accelerates at 1.5 m/s^2 for 3 s and then continues at a steady velocity for 6 more seconds. What is the total distance traveled? (Hint: draw a diagram to help you out)
~ Attempt the bonus questions if you dare! :o) ~
BONUS 1. A speedboat starts from rest accelerating at 2 m/s^2 for 20 s, continues at a steady speed for 30 s and deccelerates to rest (Vf = 0 m/s) in 30 s. Find:
a) Distance traveled
b) Average velocity
c) Time it takes to cover half the distance
BONUS 2. A car is traveling at a constant speed of 72 km/h and passes a stationary police car. The police car immediately give chase accelerating uniformly to reach a speed of 90 km/h and continues at this speed for 10 s until he overtakes the car. Find:
a) Time taken by the police to catch up with the car
b) Distance traveled by the police when this happens
